DAVENPORT, IA: Celebrate the Harvest with local foods, music and fun at the Harvest Moon Local Food Festival
Friday, October 18th 6-9pm at the Quad Cities Food Hub, 421 West River Drive in Downtown Davenport. The Harvest Moon Festival, which is open to the public, will include local food, drinks, music, education and socializing with area farmers and local food enthusiasts.
“It’s a great tradition, celebrating the Harvest, the activities of the summer growing season coming to a close,” states Jacob Bobbitt, Quad Cities Food Hub board member, “This area is fortunate to have so many local growers supplying us with fresh-picked produce. Tomatoes, potatoes, sweet-corn, kale and squash (just to name a few) picked in the morning and served on our tables that evening! As the summer growing season comes to a close its time to celebrate together what we have enjoyed individually all season long, the hard work, expertise and harvest of area farmers!” The Quad Cities Food Hub is hosting the Harvest Moon Festival from 6:00-9:00. The night will begin at 6pm with speaker, Dr. Kamyar Enshayan from University of Northern Iowa, recipient of the 2008 Sustainable Agriculture Achievement Award from Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI).
The celebration will continue with a Farm2Fork Local Hors d’oeuvres Buffet prepared by Chef James Preszler.
Featured menu items will include:
- Pumpkin spiked hummus with curry pita chips
- Pork and butternut squash satays with peanut-ginger dipping sauce
- Sweet potato falafel and flatbread with lettuce, tomato and cucumber sauce
- Lamb kofta with clove scented spaghetti squash
- Pumpkin bisque shooters with ginger foam
Heilmann Hawkeye Acres in Goose Lake , IA, Happy Hollow Farms in East Moline IL, Magnolia Crest Farms in Davenport IA, Arnold Farms in Elizabeth IL, QC Organics from Cordova, IL and Beagle Creek Farm in Galva IL., are some of the local farms whose harvests will be featured in the buffet.
Organic Farmer Cindy Heilmann says, “I love to grow organic heirloom fruits and vegetables for my family and community. Watching my granddaughters enjoy a warm tomato or the crisp healthy, sweet taste of deep purple shredded beets. The reaping of the harvest goes well beyond the taste, its how I feel knowing that I am contributing in a positive way to the health and wellbeing of my family and my community.” Heilmann has a booth at the Freight House Farmers Market in downtown Davenport, IA. “Coming together to rejoice in the harvest and our commitment to fresh, local food for our community is an important thing to do,” states Quad Cities Food Hub board member Mitch Tollerud,” I hope people will come down, meet some farmers, sample the harvest, learn about the areas local food and have fun!” Highlights to the event will also include a cash bar from Front Street Brewery and live Music by members of American Dust. Special thanks to IHMVCU, The Levee Improvement Commission, City of Davenport and Radish magazine for helping to sponsor this event.
